Authors of Perfect Health Diet

My research is informed by a broad perspective on biology and health. With my husband Paul, I am co-authour of a popular health book (Perfect Health Diet, Scribner, 2012) that has been notably successful in improving biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk.

My husband and I are scientists with a longstanding interest in diet and health. We began experimenting with a low-carb Paleo diet in 2005, spent seven years refining our diet, have successfully healed our own "middle-age" and chronic health problems through diet and lifestyle changes, and have learned a great deal about the benefits − and pitfalls − of diet and lifestyle interventions.

We believe that disease, premature aging, and impaired health have four primary causes: malnutrition, food toxicity, evolutionarily discordant lifestyles, and chronic infections by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. These causes go together. People who eat toxic, nutrient-poor diets are more likely to contract chronic infections and do not easily recover from them.

In the future, I plan to use MGTP to identify new biomarkers that link diet and lifestyle to human diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, with the goal of developing assays that enable clinicians to assess patient diet and lifestyle and make informed and scientifically supported recommendations.
